What Are Lightweight Biodiverse Green Roofs?
A Blooming Solution for Urban Wildlife and Sustainable Design

As cities expand and green spaces shrink, the importance of incorporating nature into our built environments has never been more pressing.
One of the most beautiful and practical ways to do this is through biodiverse green roofs — specifically lightweight solutions that not only reduce structural load but also create thriving habitats for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
At the forefront of this movement is The Green Roof Company’s Lightweight Biodiverse Green Roof System, specially designed for low-pitch roofs (0˚–5˚) in the UK and Ireland.
These systems blend sustainability, aesthetics, and ecological value, making them a go-to choice for environmentally conscious designers, developers, and homeowners.
What Is a Lightweight Biodiverse Green Roof?
A lightweight biodiverse green roof is an extensive living roof system designed to support a wide variety of plant species while remaining light enough for most roof structures.
It is built in layers to ensure optimal drainage, root protection, and plant health — all while contributing to biodiversity and environmental resilience.
System Build-Up Includes:
- Biodiverse Blanket (40mm) – A pre-cultivated mat featuring a stunning mix of Sedum and herbs (up to 30 different types of herbs and 12 Sedum varieties) or a special Bees & Butterflies Blanket, which includes nectar-rich plants and butterfly host plants.
- Substrate Layer – A lightweight blend of lava, pumice, and compost that provides the growing medium for vegetation. For our Lightweight Biodiverse system, the substrate layer is 70mm deep. In the standard Biodiverse system, which isn’t classified as lightweight, the substrate depth increases to 120mm.
- Drainage Sheet (20mm) – Made of recycled HDPE, this sheet includes a filter fleece to prevent blockages while efficiently managing water.
- Protective Cover – A 300 g/m² mat made from recycled fibres that safeguards the waterproofing layer.
- Root Barrier Foil – An optional layer used when roofing membranes are not root-resistant.
What Grows on a Biodiverse Roof?
What makes these green roofs truly special is their plant palette—specially selected to attract and support local wildlife, especially bees and butterflies. Here are some of the standout species you might find on a Sempergreen biodiverse roof:
For the Bees:
- Allium schoenoprasum (Chives) – May–June, Purple flowers
- Origanum vulgare (Oregano) – July–September, Purple flowers
- Thymus pulegioides (Wild Thyme) – June–November, Purple blooms
- Anthyllis vulneraria (Kidney Vetch) – May–November, Yellow flowers

For the Butterflies:
- Campanula rotundifolia (Harebell) – May–November, Purple bells
- Papaver dubium (Long-headed Poppy) – May–August, Bright red blooms
- Silene vulgaris (Bladder Campion) – May–September, Creamy-white
- Jasione montana (Sheep’s-bit Scabious) – June–August, Blue flowers
- Lotus corniculatus (Bird’s-foot Trefoil) – May–November, Yellow nectar source and butterfly host
A Burst of Colour & Biodiversity:
- Dianthus carthusianorum – June–August, Pink
- Veronica officinalis – May–August, Lilac
- Potentilla verna – March–June, Yellow
- Rumex acetosella – May–November, Red
- Galium verum – June–November, Tall yellow blooms (65 cm!)

These plants aren’t just chosen for looks — they’re picked for ecological function.
Their staggered bloom times ensure food sources are available across multiple seasons and many double as host plants for butterflies in need of places to lay their eggs.
Why Choose a Lightweight Biodiverse Green Roof?
- Supports Local Wildlife: Pollinators like bees and butterflies thrive on these roofs, helping boost urban biodiversity.
- Lightweight Design: Ideal for retrofitting existing buildings or low-slope structures.
- Pre-Cultivated for Immediate Impact: With 95% coverage upon delivery, your roof starts green from day one.
- Stormwater Management: Absorbs rainwater, reducing runoff and easing pressure on urban drainage systems.
- Thermal and Acoustic Insulation: Keeps buildings cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and quieter all year round.
