Roof Types

The style, pitch and Weight Bearing Capacity (WBC) of your roof will determine which green roof you can install. The majority of installations will be on flat and those with a pitch of up to 5° and will generally follow the guidelines for a lightweight installation.

What is the weight bearing capacity of your roof?

unknown    Upto 85kg/m2    Over 85kg/m2

Pitched roof 0-15°+ (unknown WBC)

In most cases we recommend that a flat or slightly pitched roof (between 0 – 15°) requires a lightweight green roof solution. Our special lightweight structure can transform your grey roof into a sustainable green roof almost instantly. The layer build up for this roof type will be:

Sempergreen® Sedum Mix Blanket 30mm

Pre-cultivated Sedum-mix blanket type T, consisting of a mix of ten to twelve different types of Sedum. Minimum 95%.

Substrate Roll 20mm

Substrate roll is a lightweight green roof substrate, manufactured from long mineral wool fibres. It is a good growing medium and ensures good water absorption and tenacity.

Drainage including Fleece Filter 11-20mm

The thickness of the drainage layer will depend on the roof structure and the water storage capacity required.

Pitched roof 0-15°+ (upto 85kg/m2)

Flat roofs are ideal as a green roof and can often extend the natural life of your roof.  They are made up of a drainage layer with fleece filter, nutrient rich  soil substrate, and a vegetation blanket.  This style of Sedum roof is only suitable if you know the load bearing capacity of the roof. The layer build up for this roof type will be:

Sempergreen® Sedum Mix Blanket 30mm

Pre-cultivated Sedum-mix blanket type T, consisting of a mix of ten to twelve different types of Sedum. Minimum 95%.

Roof Garden substrate (nutrient rich soil) 40mm

Extensive substrate consisting of lava, pumice and compost.

Drainage inc. Fleece Filter 10 – 40mm

The thickness of the drainage layer will depend on the roof structure and the water storage capacity required.

Pitched roof 0-15°+ (over 85kg/m2)

Shallow pitched green roofs differ slightly from the structure of a flat roof. Because water runs off the roof more quickly, a thicker substrate layer is needed. The substrate gives the right amount of nutrients to the plants, so your green roof stays nice and green. Coverage: Minimum 95%. The layer build up for this roof type will be:

Sempergreen® Sedum Mix Blanket 30mm

Pre-cultivated Sedum-mix blanket type T, consisting of a mix of ten to twelve different types of Sedum. Minimum 95%.

Roof garden substrate extensive 50mm

Extensive substrate consisting of lava, pumice and compost.

Drainage including Fleece Filter 10-40mm

The thickness of the drainage layer will depend on the roof structure and the water storage capacity required.

Roof garden substrate (nutrient rich soil) 40mm

Extensive substrate consisting of lava, pumice and compost, this specially designed roof garden substrate ensures that each layer of vegetation gets the proper nutrition despite the limited thickness of the soil layer.

Drainage including Fleece Filter 10–40mm

The thickness of the drainage layer will depend on the roof structure and the water storage capacity required.
